On Tuesday, January 24th Jon defended his dissertation for his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership! His committee signed off on it so he is now, technically, Dr. Wylie!! We are so thankful to be finished and so blessed by all the support and encouragement we had along the way. (graduation coming this May)

Granna Wylie, Mr. Richard, BeBe and PopPop all came into town for the defense and a celebratory dinner. Here are a few pictures from "defense day."

The kids ran out to greet "Dr. Daddy" when he got home.
(No they don't actually call him that! But it was fun for the day!)

I am loving the stage Lydda Grace and Wade are in right now. They are just starting to figure out playing together, give each other hugs and kisses, show concern for one another, talk to each other.... it's great. Granted that with this comes fits where they scream at each other or Wade hits Lydda Grace with a (soft) bat... maybe next time that happens I'll lock myself in our bedroom and just look at these pictures :)

Dear Wade-

Twenty months is an odd time to write you a letter... but 18 months came and went all too quickly and if I wait until you are two I know you will be doing even more! It's very hard to believe that you will be two years old in just 4 months, that seems not to be a "baby" age in my mind and you are very much still my baby!

You are into EVERYTHING these days! I love to see what captures your attention, what makes you laugh and what you're capable of doing on your own (which amazes me every day). Here are some of the things that stand out to me about you at this age:

- You are so loving, cuddly and affectionate! One of your favorite phrases is "hol' meee! hol' mee!" and when you stand in front of me, reaching your arms up saying that it's very hard to tell you no! Often when you get up from your afternoon nap you're still just waking up and we can sit in the rocker and talk and cuddle. I love that time with you. You also sleep best when you're with someone. Just this past Sunday Daddy laid down with you for an afternoon nap and you both slept almost 3 hours! But I think my favorite thing about you being so cuddly is how quickly you find my lap! As soon as I sit on the floor (if you're not busy with something else) you beeline for me, turn around, and plop! right into my lap :)

- You are talking A LOT! We seem to have just come to the point where we can have a conversation with you and it is so much fun to see your comprehension and to try to translate what you're saying. Your favorite word (by FAR) is "no!" Most of the time that is just your automatic answer to a question... even when we're sure it's not what you actually mean (i.e. "Wade, do you want some ice cream?" "No!")
Other things you say that make me smile---- "mik" (milk... except that's what you call every drink), "i do!!" (your response to any question I begin by asking, "who wants to....?"), "neen nup, neen nup" (your version of the clean up song), "dit joo" (from reading that no one else would have a clue what that means... but that's what it sounds like when you say "get you" which is what you say when we tickle you or chase you) and "mank mank" which is really hard to figure out.... it's "pancake!" you eat pancakes for breakfast a lot and sometimes for snack!!

- There are a few things you really love: snugli ("nunni"), your thumb... ALL the time!, balls (every kind, shape, size, color, etc), shoes (mostly everyone elses), playing outside, climbing, closing doors, playing with Lydda Grace, snack ("nack"- which is pretty much anything like dry cereal or pretzels), playing chase

As with every age so far I love to see how your relationship with your big sister is changing. You two are finally getting to the age where you play together (and of course aggravate each other a good bit in the process!). You both love to be silly together, play dress up, play with duplos.... every once in a while you'll randomly run over to Lydda Grace and wrap her up in a huge hug (this has resulted a couple times in you completely knocking her over!). I pray that you two will become great friends.

Wade, you are such a joy to me, Daddy, and Lydda Grace!!!

Molly and Carson have been our sweet friends since 2008 when we moved back to Clemson and Molly was an RA in one of Jon's buildings. Molly came to our apartment to meet me (I was pregnant with LG) and we've been friends ever since! After graduating they stayed in the area and have a sweet little one of their own. We've had a semi regular date night once a week for the moms and kids to hang out while the daddies work late on school stuff.

This past week before Molly and Miles came over I was talking with LG and something came up that made me ask, "Lydda Grace, why don't you play with your baby dolls, you can pretend to feed and change them, that would be fun!!" To which she replied, "But Mom, they're not reeeeaaaalllll!" :)

I guess there's no substitute when you have a real baby to play with! She loves to "babysit" Miles when he comes to visit.

The other day Lydda Grace randomly said she had invented a recipe and wanted to eat a marshmallow peanut butter and jelly sandwich... interesting. So after Wade went to bed we tried out her "invention." I wasn't sure if she meant marshmallows ON a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.... but an actual marshmallow sandwich seemed much more intriguing..... so this is what we ended up with. She of course loved it :)

It was nice after all our travels to come back home and hang out and get back into a routine. After going to church on Sunday the kids and I didn't leave the house until Friday morning except for one quick Bi-Lo run!

Getting the mattress out is one of our favorite things to do.
The kids love bouncing around on it, reading, watching a movie, etc.
We probably do this about once a month, so it's a fun treat!

Our fox! a little scary as we yelled at it walked towards it
and threw a red rubber ball at it and it didn't move. Animal
control and our friends (who are a hunter and a vet) assured us this was
not normal behavior and we should probably keep an eye on it. We
haven't seen it since....

So Emily and Granna had the great idea to take the kids for Krispy Kreme donuts one morning for breakfast. Emily had envisioned great pictures of icing all over their faces from the new camera. Granna looked forward to sharing in the first donut experience. And below is what actually happened.

So Emily, Lydda Grace, Wade Allen, and I got to go see mom and Mr. Richard for Christmas. Here are somethings we did.

1. Eat lunch with Great Grandmother Downey at K&W on Healy Dr.

2. Wade was not feeling well, so he slept a lot.

3. Going to visit Mrs. Hanes Cookies (you can watch the people make the cookies right in front of you. Everything is done by hand.)

4. Yogi bear in 3D (what a treat)

5. Just one glimpse at a time of the kitties.

6. Christmas dinner out on the town in Winston-Salem.

7. Fruit kebabs. (LG got her first cookbook from Granna. You can see how much fun she was having.)

a few things I want to remember this year at Christmas

- Lydda Grace's favorite Christmas song is "Joy to the World" she doesn't have it down quite right but she makes up for it with enthusiasm!

- Sometimes when we hear a song on the radio or in a store LG will say "They're singing about baby Jesus!!!!!"

- When we are out driving Lydda Grace is quick to spot Baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph in nativity scenes. I love that this is what stands out to her and what she gets excited about when we're looking at Christmas decorations.

- Lots of homemade ornaments on our tree this year! I'm loving it!

- The one-finger rule for the tree doesn't work! We've tried to satisfy the kids' curiosity to touch the Christmas tree by telling them they are allowed to touch it with one finger..... this has only resulted in well over 2/3 of our ornaments on the top 1/2 of the tree!

This past Sunday we had the chance to go to Memama Wylie's house (Jon's dad's family home) to celebrate Christmas! I think there were 22 of us there at one point! We had such a wonderful time hanging out with everyone! Lydda Grace's highlight seemed to be driving out Sunday night to look at some really wonderful Christmas lights (which she called fairyland!), Wade's highlight seemed to be eating goldfish to his heart's content and having lots of doting relatives help him with this endeavor!

Wade was still sleeping. LG was at the table having breakfast and I had run to the bathroom. Suddenly I hear....

Of course I flew back towards the kitchen to see LG's glass of milk knocked over and puddled on the floor. Whew.... at least she wasn't crying over it.

Lemonade Picnic

You may ask what a Lemonade picnic entails. Well let me describe to you.

First, you need a cookie sheet (which of course serves as the tray the drinks will be served on). Second, you need three miniature cups. Third, you need a miniature pitcher. You may be asking don't you need lemonade. Lemonade ingredients: Sprite and margarita mix (lemonade substitute).

Once the dishes are collected, the lemonade must be made. Fill half of the pitcher up with sprite (Lydda Grace poured this into the pitcher. Next, fill the other half with margarita mix (Wade poured this into the pitcher). I then carried this over to our picnic mat.

Christmas Gift - Russian Tea Mix

So tonight, Lydda Grace, Wade and I went to Bi-lo to buy ingredients to make powdered Russian Tea.

Here we are getting into the car buggy.

Of course we have to stop to get the free cookie.

First Ingredient - Tang

Second Ingredient - Unsweetened Instant Tea

Third Ingredient - Lemonade mix

Also you will need sugar, cinnamon, and cloves. All you need is to mix these ingredients and then put two tablespoons in a cup of water. Here is the recipe.

doctor visit

The kids both had their 3 year and 18 month well check-ups today.

Wade threw the cap for LG's urine specimen cup in the toilet and then flushed it while I was trying to catch a little peepee in the cup, and then I had to reach into the toilet and get it out..... great start!

I had reassured LG over and over that she wasn't due for shots only to realize that she needed the flu vaccine! I felt horrible, just humbly told her I was wrong and apologized for misleading her... didn't seem to help as she screamed until it was over and she got a sparkly band-aid and was completely happy again!

Overall, as I look back over our day I am thinking how grateful I am that I was able to take both my babies to the doctor for WELL check-ups and that they both checked out beautifully. It's a sobering thing to reflect upon while my sweet friend Rose, her husband Brian and their one day-old baby Jude are at MUSC and Jude is fighting to survive.

We've been staying busy for the last several weeks. These are some pictures before and since Thanksgiving of life on the homefront.

Wade loves markers! Good thing they are washable!

I saw this on a blog.... play with uncooked spaghetti noodles and play doh
it was GREAT. They loved sticking the noodles into the play doh and it
occupied them WAY longer than anything has in a long time.

Wade's been off and on congested and has had to use the
nebulizer. I remember when LG got to the age that she could sit by herself to
do it I thought she was so old and now the Wadester can do it on his own!

Beans!! And yes, they are holding ice cream cones. LG asked if they could
have them to scoop with and I said sure why not?! I quickly discovered
why not.... beans stick to soggy ice cream cones... ugh, oh well! It was fun!

Wade kept playing long after LG was finished. When he started
throwing beans I decided it was time to clean up :)

While we were away in China Lydda Grace and Wade stayed very busy with BeBe and PopPop! They (the kids I mean!) did amazingly well (well now that I think about it so did BeBe and PopPop!!). We Skyped with them twice and it didn't seem to faze them. Here are a few highlights.

These are all from our last day in China, Friday. Jon went to the Temple of Heaven (while I shopped at the Pearl Market), we met up for lunch and then all went to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City. They're kind of out of order.....

Forbidden City- 9 is considered a perfect number,
the doors all had knobs, 9 across and 9 down.

Oops... this was Thursday night! After dinner. Lots of the students we saw
took pictures like this, it's not the peace sign, it means "happy"
Also, when you take pictures you can say, "E, Er, San... Qiezi"
Which is really 1, 2, 3... eggplant, but it is the "chee" sound, like we say "cheese"

Real Chinese food is phenomenal. We tasted very few things we didn't like. Most of our food pictures are of half eaten plates. I love that restaurants in China serve everything family style. Our favorites: green beans (I ate them like fries, could not stop!), sweet and sour chicken, eggs and tomatoes, eggplant, crispy fried potatoes (in the picture below), did I mention the green beans?

It truly was amazing. One of those times in your life when you do something you never thought you'd do. We were hoping for a day not as "hazy" so we could have seen it farther, but it was still staggering.

Jon climbed higher than I did. Very steep!

On the way down they have a toboggan that you can ride down the mountain. It was a full five minute ride and super fun! Jon videoed it so I'll see if he can upload it later.

Just a little break from the "main" China blogging to show some of our favorite signs we saw. It is very hard to make a direct translation of English from Chinese as Chinese is more about ideas while English is very literal. This often results in really funny signs affectionately called "Chinglish."

Not really Chinglish, just funny. Sadly the bathroom was
closed so we didn't get a chance to see what a 4 star toilet
looked like.

From Tuesday to Thursday morning we were in Harbin, a city in the north of about 10 million people. (Half the size of Beijing!) We met with some teachers there, Jon got to spend some time in the classroom and I got to meet with a mom and hang out for the afternoon talking about life as a non-teaching spouse.

After we checked in, Jon and I wandered around campus before lunch.

Like I mentioned earlier, exercise equipment for all to use!

Lunch was great, had fun hanging out with some super sweet
students!

It was so great to have some little ones to play with
and cuddle as I was missing mine like CRAZY!

After English Corner (a time when students come to practice

These were all taken on Monday.

Walking through another hutong. The discrepancy between
a main street in Beijing that has every kind of high end store you
can think of to the poverty in these hutongs is staggering.

It's hard to know where to begin... we've tried to let people know as we've seen you, but if you haven't heard, we're looking into and working towards moving to China to teach English. We like to joke that all Jon's students are going to have a southern drawl by the time he's done with them!

We visited for 9 days to meet with current teachers, learn about what they do and what life is like for their families. It was an eye-opening, confirming and encouraging trip! I'll follow with many other blog posts (overload on pictures but I'm narrowing it down from over 500, so this is actually good!)

of a major university area. This service was in English and was PACKED
There are several services and there's always a line to get in.

There's the usual like chicken, pork, or even corn but we

One of our adopted students rows on the crew team and I got to take the kids out one Saturday morning while Jon had to work to see a regatta. They loved all the people and dogs and the water and rocks, etc... but didn't seem to understand that we were actually looking at boats since the rowing boats look so different than any boat they've ever seen!

We had been watching for a while, and I kept pointing out the teams rowing by and the colors of the boats, and then a motorboat zooms up the middle of the lake in front of us, "Booooaaaatttt!!!!" they both yelled!

For a Staff Senate fundraiser Jon was asked (they figured he was the only one who would do it) to dress up as the Chick-fil-a cow. Since Jon's middle name is "Chick-fil-a" he was beyond excited. (He came home when he found out and said, "GUESS WHAT I GET TO BE?!?!?!?!".... just like that)

So here's our family with Jon as the CFA cow.... but where is Lydda Grace? She is in the playground, in the highest farthest corner saying over and over, "I don't want to see the cow!".... She FINALLY came down when Jon got out of the costume and personally came and got her.

And then LG got to paint her own chameleon! She loved it and painted several of them. I just drew the shape with a pencil, she painted it in and then we cut it out. Very simple and fun.

The other day on a family walk we saw a rabbit tear around the corner and go into
the woods. Two seconds later, an animal appeared around the corner that made us
pause.... it was a fox! We came home and found some fox pictures to color!

After we went apple picking we did some apple activities.

We went apple picking at SkyTop Orchard last Friday. It was SO fun! The kids had a great time picking apples and then we sampled lots of different kinds and chose some from the store. We had a picnic and enjoyed some pumpkin and apple cider donuts. A super fun day!!

If you've not heard of Crop Walk before check out their site. Basically, the idea of Crop Walk is that "we walk because they walk" recognizing that millions of people around the world are starving and don't have access to clean water. They often have to walk long distances for fresh water. Crop Walks raise money for fighting hunger around the world and in local communities.

LG and I participate in our local walk this year. She was really excited about it and we talked a lot about why we were walking. I took her in the jogging stroller since I didn't think she'd be able to make it over 3 miles... good thing I did because she ended up sleeping most of the way!!

This is a fun new craft we do, I write a "secret message" with white crayon on a white piece of paper. Then LG paints over it with watercolors revealing the message! Simple and very fun :)

Wade-isms

Wade is coming up with new words all the time and it is so fun to figure out what he's saying. I feel like he talks in code to us, most people probably wouldn't understand most of what he says.

- "docks" and "dhoes"= socks and shoes, many of his words end up starting with a "d." He LOVES sock and shoes and gets really excited when I tell him it's time to put socks and/or shoes on. He will very obediently sit down and wait for me to put them on him. He also likes to pull all of LG's socks out of her drawer.
- "yunyine"= sunshine, LG commented on the sunshine on a walk the other day and he now talks about the yunyine a lot when we are out and it's sunny.
- "ooo-ah"= hooyah! You can guess who taught him that one!
- "ts"= Lydda Grace. Jon discovered this last night. If we point to LG and say, "who is this?" then Wade says, "ts"... no idea how he got this... maybe from sister??
- "ni-mooo"= Goodnight Moon- now that he likes to read he has found a favorite and this is it!

Jon's conversation partner, Jiannan, sent him home with some mooncakes for the kids to try! Mooncakes are THE food for the Chinese Mid-Autumn festival which was celebrated on Sept. 12th. Most mooncakes are round, but Jiannan got some really cute ones for the kids that were shaped like bunnies (it's the year of the rabbit). Lydda Grace loved the idea of mooncakes but didn't eat very much of hers, Wade however was a different story. He apparently LOVES mooncakes and only paused between bites long enough to smile at us and say "mmmmmm!!!!" Thanks Jiannan for a fun and yummy treat!

Wade ate dinner... two nights in a row... all of it... what I cooked!

AMAZING!

Our little fruitarian ate a chicken, rice, broccoli casserole last night, and tonight he ~~ate~~ drank his butternut squash soup... both nights he asked for more.

Jon keeps reminding me that my emotions must not be dictated by things such as the eating habits of certain small children. I am determined to remain joyful tomorrow night when he goes back to only eating grapes for dinner.

We have been trying to get the kids to carry their Bibles to church every Sunday, just a small way to teach them the importance of the Word!
